Welcome to Green Maine Kids
Thank you for visiting GreenMaineKids.com.
GreenMaineKids.com is the idea of a 10 year old boy from Maine who is interested in spreading the word about caring for the environment, recycling and the importance of thinking Green. he helps by serious gardening with his grandfather and recycling kitchen waste by composting with his grandmother. Here are some tips to help you get started!
here are some instructions to build a com poster that you can use around your house!
-
you make a base out of chicken wire and posts and make sure that you file down the edges do you don't cut yourself.
-
you put a layer of kitchen waste and then put some horse manure and then keep cycling through that process adding a layer of grass clippings from time to time
-
you should water it and turn the waste over every week or so.
-
then wait a while for it to start turning to soil!
Please visit the site often....share your idea with him.
some of the most helpful way to go green around your home are composting, solar,or even a rain water collector! here is one more useful idea if you let your dog hang out the window you could be spending money by the minute! the reason is that your dog will create a draft and that will effect your millage and that will cost you money.
another good idea is that you should use energy cool appliances in your kitchen that will use less energy than the older devices plus it will cut down on your energy bill! you can also use less energy by using one of the new flat screens because they will use a lot less energy than the big ones. you can also use laptops instead of the old desktops because it will use less energy.
there are many different ways to go green and in the kitchen is one of the best places to do that! Here are some helpful tips that you can do in your kitchen
kitchen
- Reuse sponges as long as you can so you can save resources
- Use less soap when your hand washing to save resources
- only start the dish washer when full and hand wash with small load
school
- use as much as the pencil as you can before getting another one to save wood
- in classrooms use whiteboards to cut down on the use of paper
- use projectors so you can show the class and save trees and copies of paper
- don't use as many folders when you file your work
work/office
- try to use the front and back of the paper to save wood and trees
- When you use a sticky note you should use the back and when it is all done you should put it into the recycling bucket. I call this recycling for the future!!
- When you are printing thing's at work you should always print in black and white to make sure that there are no errors in it and then you should print in color. You will save a lot of color ink and you will help save the planet. It takes a lot of recorses to make the color ink and dose not take as muck to make black ink
Renewable Energy
Wind Turbines
Wind turbines have been around for a while. Back then they were used to grind thing's like rock and wheat. They were also used to pump water from wells. Just a couple of years ago they came out with new state of the art turbines which can harness the wind and turn it into renewable energy. As you may have seen one of these big machines on top of a mountain, in somebody's backyard or in the sea. These turbines need a lot of wind too turn so they are put in the windiest places they can find. There are PROS and CONS of these turbines.

Office
When you are at work, try not to print hard copies of files, but instead store them electronically to save paper and ink. Plus you can search for them easily when they are filed electronically.

walking to school
My 3rd grade students think that we can "go green" in Maine by walking or riding our bikes to places that are close to us. We also think that recycling is important, but before we recycle we should try to actually cut down on the amount of paper and packaging we use to begin with. Finally, we think that using metal bottles for our water is much better than having mom or dad by cases of bottled water. If people did not buy water in plastic bottles to begin with, we would really cut down on the number of bottles that need to be recycled.

recycling cans
I think that everybody should recycle bottles. It's not hard at all, just keep a bin in your house and throw your bottles in. Plus you can get money for doing that.

reducing water
I think that we should all try and remember to shut off the water as we brush our teeth, only turning it on to wet our toothbrush and rinse. That will save water. I also think it's important to limit use of lights in the house and workplace when they are not necessary. This will save on electricity. tammy | Topsham, maine | Dec 14th, 2010
